Understanding Metatarsal Joint Pain

The metatarsals are the five long bones in the middle of the foot that connect the toes to the rest of the foot structure. These bones play a key role in weight bearing and movement, especially during walking, running, or standing for long periods. Metatarsal joint pain can occur when there is inflammation or strain in the area where these bones meet the toes. This pain is often described as a burning, aching, or sharp sensation in the ball of the foot and may worsen with activity. Causes can include overuse, wearing improper footwear, foot deformities, or arthritis. Rest, footwear changes, and padding can provide relief. Custom orthotics are sometimes recommended to improve alignment and reduce pressure on the joints. If pain in the ball of your foot is making it hard to stay active, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Highlands Foot and Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a term that is commonly used to describe joint pain.  The condition itself can occur to anyone of any age, race, or gender, and there are over 100 types of it.  Nevertheless, arthritis is more commonly found in women compared to men, and it is also more prevalent in those who are overweight. The causes of arthritis vary depending on which type of arthritis you have. Osteoarthritis for example, is often caused by injury, while rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a misdirected immune system.

Symptoms

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased Range of Motion

Arthritic symptoms range in severity, and they may come and go. Some symptoms stay the same for several years but could potentially get worse with time. Severe cases of arthritis can prevent its sufferers from performing daily activities and make walking difficult.

Risk Factors

  • Occupation – Occupations requiring repetitive knee movements have been linked to osteoarthritis
  • Obesity – Excess weight can contribute to osteoarthritis development
  • Infection – Microbial agents can infect the joints and trigger arthritis
  • Joint Injuries – Damage to joints may lead to osteoarthritis
  • Age – Risk increases with age
  • Gender –Most types are more common in women
  • Genetics – Arthritis can be hereditary

If you suspect your arthritis is affecting your feet, it is crucial that you see a podiatrist immediately. Your doctor will be able to address your specific case and help you decide which treatment method is best for you.

Common Causes of Sore Feet

Sore feet can stem from many causes related to overuse, excessive pressure, or inflammation. Long hours of standing, especially without movement, can lead to poor circulation and fatigue in the feet. Wearing shoes that lack proper support or high heels may put extra strain on the heel bone, arch, or forefoot, leading to pain. Physical activity, such as running or walking long distances, may cause soreness in the feet due to stress on the muscles, tendons, and joints. Your foot’s structure also plays a role, as people with flat feet, bunions, or abnormal gait patterns may experience ongoing discomfort. Gout, an inflammatory condition, can lead to sharp foot pain, especially in the big toe. A podiatrist can identify the cause of your foot pain and provide appropriate treatment. If your feet are sore on a regular basis, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment.

What Can Cause Poor Foot Circulation?

Poor foot circulation can result from several underlying health conditions and often leads to discomfort and more serious complications, if left untreated. Peripheral vascular disease is a common cause, where narrowed blood vessels reduce blood flow to the limbs, often leading to pain, numbness, or a cold sensation in the feet. Heart disease can also impair circulation by limiting the heart's ability to pump blood efficiently throughout the body, including the lower extremities. Raynaud's syndrome affects circulation by causing the small arteries in the feet to constrict, especially in response to cold or stress, leading to color changes and a feeling of coldness or tingling. Symptoms of poor circulation include swelling, cramping, slow healing wounds, and a heavy or fatigued feeling in the legs and feet. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and treatment solutions.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Highlands Foot and Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.
